Choosing the words for your website

For writers, creating content for a website is not usually a problem. However, it's worth remembering the following points:

Displaying text:
It’s important to remember that displaying text on a screen is not the same as displaying text in a book. Large, dense blocks of text on a computer screen are difficult to read, so your text should be divided into short paragraphs and your web page should contain plenty of white space. It can be a good idea to divide your content up into paragraphs with headings, a bit like this page.

Choosing a font for your website:
Fonts can make a huge difference to the look and feel of your website. Never make the mistake of using a variety of fonts. Consistency is important for good web communication. The colour should contrast well with the background. Simple fonts such as Ariel and Verdana are easiest to read. Italics can be hard to read on a computer screen.

Content:
Your content should be succinct – focusing on the key points you want to make. For the purposes of being found by the search engines, you need to make sure that you include key words and phrases that people are likely to use to search for you or your book on the internet.

What to say on your home page:
Many website owners have difficulty deciding what to say on the home page. It's role is essentially attention grabbing, welcoming your visitor and encouraging them to look at the rest of your site. Some authors use this page for reader reviews.
